NVAO assesses higher education in Luxembourg (again)08/07/2020

At the beginning of this year, the Flemish branch of the Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO) assessed the LUNEX University in Luxembourg and four of its programmes. The assessment reports have now been sent to the Luxembourg Ministry of Higher Education and Research, which takes an accreditation decision. It is not the first time that Luxembourg recruits the NVAO to assess the quality of its higher education.

NVAO has considerable expertise in international quality assurance and has been paving the way for a European Approach for quality assurance of joint programmes, the mutual recognition of programmes and degrees and the dissemination of good practices. In its own region, the QA agency is constantly responding to new developments within higher education.

This ambitious mindset did not go unnoticed by other countries and regions. Recently, the Luxembourg Ministry of Higher Education and Research recruited the NVAO to assess the LUNEX University and four of its programmes in the field of ‘physiotherapy’, ‘sports and exercise science’ and ‘sport management’. The assessment was carried out by an independent NVAO panel of international experts based on a framework that combines both the Luxembourg legal criteria and the Flemish standards for external QA of institutions and programmes.

The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg relies on foreign QA agencies to assess the quality of its higher education. The review and assessments by the NVAO panel of international experts result in assessment reports for the Luxembourg ministry, which takes an accreditation decision based on these reports.

Axel Aerden, Managing Director Flanders: “Our assessment activities in Luxembourg are in line with our international strategy to strengthen the higher education and quality assurance cooperation in the Benelux, and is backed up by our experiences in Luxembourg and in the Benelux at large.”
