Revision of the European Standards and Guidelines (ESG)13/11/2025

At the Tirana (Albania) Ministerial Communiqué in May 2024, a mandate was given to revise the European Standards and Guidelines for Quality Assurance in the European Higher Education Area (ESG).

For this process, a Steering Group and a Drafting Group were established. Drawing on several rounds of consultation with stakeholders, the Steering Group examined where an extension of the ESG would be desirable—such as with regard to topics like micro-credentials—and how the standards could be formulated in a clearer and more unambiguous manner.

The objectives of the revision are to:

• address ambiguities identified on the basis of practical experience;

• minimise divergent interpretations as far as possible; and

• transfer certain elements from the guidelines to the standards, as these have already been assessed as such in practice.

The Drafting Group has now prepared a proposal in which the foreword and all three chapters of the ESG have been revised.

 The public consultation will open on 17 November 2025 and will run until 9 January 2026. During this period, all interested parties are invited to provide feedback on the draft revised ESG.
